Antonio Muñoz, Mayor of Seville, has highlighted that the large demonstration area, located in the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of Seville (FIBES), will be accessible to the public to have a first experience and contact with the Metaverse. The objective is to make known through the leading companies in 5G technology all the real applications and use cases of this technology so that any citizen can learn about its advantages.
The 5G Forum is the main multidisciplinary meeting around 5G technology that is held in Spain, and large companies and telecoms such as Telefónica, Orange, Nokia, American Tower, Viavi Solutions, Capgemini Engineering, Rohde & Schwarz, Keysight Technologies, Ateme, Advantech, among others, are present on this occasion to bring their clients, universities, experts, institutions, cities and the general public closer and show their novelties that did not have the opportunity to be at the last edition of the MWC in Barcelona on last February.
The use cases of Telefónica and the 5G democratization of Orange
“Digital transformation is now”, is the motto with which Telefónica attended the MWC, to which it brought an unprecedented proposal for companies and Public Administrations, which it now wants to transfer to the 5G Forum in Seville. Especially, Telefónica highlighted in the Metaverse, with the intention of combining the best of the physical and virtual world.
In addition, it will present its success stories with 5G communications applied to industrial traffic safety and robotic remote control. An example of this is the Robot Spot Xplorer. A robot dog designed for surveillance and first aid. It goes up and down stairs quickly, dodges obstacles and executes learned routes. This robot, inspired by the biomechanics of quadrupedal animals, has 360 vision that allows it to record from different angles. It has a thermal imaging camera, it can see in the dark and recreate 3D graphics from the images that capture the place.
For its part, the French company Orange will surprise attendees on May 9 at Fibes with several demonstrations based on the 5G world. One of the live exhibits will be remote inspection and maintenance with robots. A project managed by Robotnik in collaboration with the French operator. The research focuses on the development of mobile robots controlled remotely via 5G to carry out inspection and maintenance tasks in critical places, such as railway facilities or electrical infrastructures. . The difficulty of the terrains faced by the robots generates the need for a high capacity for transmitting information and very low latency.
Another use case that Orange will expose will be how to provide remote technical support service through 5G. The support developed will allow remote instructions to be given to the personnel in charge of solving a problem: it can range from a firefighter to a nuclear power plant technician. Whoever receives the instructions wears VR glasses, which include simultaneous translation. The glasses are designed to offer an immersive experience in any situation. The user who uses them experiences each of the situations in the first person.
Nokia’s realverse and Lavinia’s metaverse
For its part, the Finnish multinational Nokia arrived at the 5G Forum 2022 in Seville with three experiences called Volcán, El Búho and Ametista.
Volcán is a gamified demonstration of the execution on the 5G network (“offloading”) of artificial intelligence applications applied to extended reality. Users of the demo will have to walk on a dangerous tile path on top of an erupting volcano, controlling where they are stepping, thanks to the fact that they can see their own body in the virtual experience.
El Búho is a demonstration on immersive telepresence, which will allow the participants in the demonstration to feel teleported to another place (in this case nearby) and interact with the people present there. Amethyst is an immersive music app that showcases an application of 5G networks and immersive technology for palliative therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.
The application presented by the Finnish Nokia is a demonstration in an environment related to the very current theme of the Metaverse: the objective is to introduce the user’s real body into a virtual reality experience, to make the experience much more realistic. its environment in an egocentric way and an artificial intelligence algorithm is used to separate the body from the rest of the physical environment, and thus be able to mix it with the virtual application.
In turn, the Catalan production company Lavinia will move its Metaverse experimentation laboratory to the 5G Forum in Seville, on which it has been working for more than three years and which it will present in public for the first time, after its private tests. With almost 200 square meters of space, Lavinia offered all the participants in the 5G Forum and the general public, especially students and university students, the possibility of enjoying a unique 20-minute immersive experience. In the company of other traveling companions, individuals/avatars will go up in elevators, users will travel in trains and will get lost in virtual labyrinths in an experience developed on the concept of “The Dreams”.
The digital Mupi of American Tower and the avatars of Capgemini Engineering
On the part of the American company American Tower, on May 9 it will exhibit a digital Mupi that works through 5G technology, which will aim to show a business model based on a hybrid support of telecommunications, citizen information and advertising. Adapting to the urban style.
This Mupi shows that connectivity has never been more discreet while respecting the visual harmony of the city. It is made up of a LED screen and that makes it an exclusive location, with technologically attractive solutions for advertisers and the public administration.
Another characteristic of this Mupi is that they are also made up of the so-called Smart Points: finish failed deliveries and necessary contacts, improving the service to the citizen. Attendees will be able to enjoy, using their phone’s camera, a unique experience based on 5G operation.
On the other hand, the French company Capgemini Engineering will exhibit, on the opening day of the 5G Forum, a demonstration of avatars with people. A 5G 360º augmented assistance solution, focused on industry 4.0, to improve remote assistance for field operators. It allows you to connect, share data and receive support from a remote expert using various technologies: 5G, 360 cameras, virtual reality and augmented reality. An experience that promises to be unforgettable for users.
Finally, attendees will also be able to learn about demonstrations by large multinationals such as Rohde & Schwarz, Keysight Technologies, VIAVI Solutions and Advantech. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to drive a Tesla or enjoy the broadcasts of UHD Spain.
5G Forum 2022 and Seville
Seville has been one of the first Spanish cities to offer a suitable framework for the development of 5G technology. On the one hand, the pilot project launched at the PCT Cartuja has meant a key use of this disruptive technology in real environments.
